What is the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful person? Two days. Let’s say you take two people with equally good ideas or goals. In fact, let’s say we have two people of the same age who want to lose weight in the new year. They both have the same plan and same weight to lose. In the beginning, they stay on track, but something happens. One person skips a couple days and their whole routine begins to unravel. Pretty soon, they only hit the gym once a week instead of three. Sure, they progress a little, but not nearly to level of the other. That is why, generally, two days can make or break your success.
This could be one of many issues when it comes to habits or goals. Often, we make them WAY harder than we need them to be. Honestly, this doesn’t really make sense. You don’t build a house in a day. In fact, a builder probably has a schedule for what needs to be done each day so a project will end on time. Making goals easy to accomplish creates a compounding affect, just like building a house.
Another problem is that habits are never satisfying or obvious. In fact, the mental game is half the battle. One reason why it FEELS good to think about achieving something is your brain gets a dopamine hit mimicking the actual accomplishment. By making small, sustainable goals, you are literally hacking your brain in order to reach the end. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. If we refuse to accomplish those daily habits, we will quickly have small, compounding effects that lead to the exact opposite of where you want to be. You don’t gain 50 pounds in day.
If you really want to make it to the end of goal, get an accountability partner. There will be days when you feel like not doing even the smallest task. Realistically, we all get there sometimes. It is the human condition. Having someone to encourage and push you is priceless. At the very least, you don’t want to disappoint another person. For instance, at Consolidated Assurance, we keep our agents accountable with weekly webinars to keep everyone on track, equipped, and on fire.
When it comes to developing habits, it seems like an oxymoron to say small is best. However, goals are marathons, not sprints. You can’t build a house in a day. If you have dreams to own your time or work for yourself, learn more about how we make that attainable for sales professionals across the nation by visiting www.consolidatedassurance.com.
